Clashes rage in Syria as Russia delays UN vote
The latest wave of violent clashes in Syria left dozens dead on Wednesday as Russia told Western powers and the Arab League that a UN vote on a tough resolution against President Bashar al-Assad would need more time.

RE: 'Half of Damascus falls to rebels'
WASHINGTON, Feb 1 (Reuters) - The United States, European governments and Arab states have begun discussing the possibility of exile for Bashar al-Assad despite skepticism the defiant Syrian president is ready to consider such an offer, Western officials said on Wednesday.

While talks have not progressed far and there is no real sense that Assad's fall is imminent, one official said as many as three countries were willing to take him as a way to bring an end to Syria's bloody 10-month-old crisis.

Two sources said no European states were prepared to give Assad sanctuary, but one official said the United Arab Emirates might be among those open to the idea...

At least 105 people have been killed in a district of the Syrian city of Homs, a human rights group has claimed.

The deaths occurred after shelling by Syrian armed forces, according to the Syrian Observatory For Human Rights.

"At least 105 people were killed in a massacre in the Khalidya district of Homs, including women and children," Rami Abdulrahman, head of the British-based rights group, said.

"Syrian forces are shelling the district with mortars from several locations, some buildings are on fire," he said.

Citing witnesses, Mr Abdulrahman said hundreds more people were wounded in the attack north of the capital Damascus.

Homs has has become a flashpoint of the 10-month revolt against the regime of President Bashar al Assad.

RE: 'Half of Damascus falls to rebels'
(CNN) -- As international leaders wrestled over the weekend how to deal with the crisis in Syria, much of the nation remained engulfed in violence -- including attacks by government forces on one embattled city that the opposition Syrian National Council described as a "massacre."
