RE: Anti-Japanese Demonstrations in China
China’s Anti-Japan Riots Are State-Sponsored. Period.

Really? Then where is China’s police force? Even if all the riot police are busy doing traffic stops or something, I’d think if nothing else the chengguan could handle something like this pretty easily (and we all know how much they hate it when people dirty up city sidewalks).

The evidence that China is turning a blind eye to these protests is overwhelming. The absence of China’s police forces is glaringly obvious, especially in contrast to the vast numbers that turn up and start jumping in front of lenses and smashing cameras whenever a protest China’s government doesn’t like is scheduled to take place. China has clearly shown it is more than capable of keeping anti-Japan protests under control if it wants to. The obvious conclusion now — the only conclusion now — is that it doesn’t want to.

(Obviously, if we were to look at the sabre-rattling that has been going on in China’s media, we’d find more evidence that the government is not-so-subtly fanning the flames here. Case in point: a sympathetic editorial about the protests in the People’s Daily. That link is now broken, but the it is cited in the New York Times.)

Some will probably still feel that the title of this blog post is a bit sensationalist, but I disagree. The state many not be financially supporting — or even publicly encouraging — these protests, but I would argue the low police presence and apparent lack of attempted control sends a very strong message of support, especially in a country where you can get arrested and sentenced to a year of labor for a retweeting a joke.

pin for a couple days...this could get serious...what a great way to distract china from the impending deflationary collapse they are about to see

from another website...a comment by a poster who used to date a petite chinese girl in the US

"Personal anecdote - Back in 2005, I dated a pretty Chinese girl who was working here in NYC for about 6 weeks. She was sweet about almost everything, until the conversation turned to the Japanese people. The most ardent racist member of the KKK or anti-semetic would-be Nazi had NOTHING on her in terms of hating Japanese. It was like she became a completely different person. Trying to explain things rationally did nothing. One of the reasons that I ended things with her very quickly."

When you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing

When you see that men get rich more easily by graft than by work, and your laws no longer protect you against them, but protect them against you

Our news said this morning that the average chinese protestor believes that Japan has just now invaded these islands in an act of war. I don´t even think they know the islands are just fucking empty piles of rock.

Looks like they are going to find out....

In response, China sent six surveillance ships to the area, which contains potentially large gas reserves. On Monday, a flotilla of around 1,000 Chinese fishing boats was sailing for the islands and was due to reach them later in the day, the state-owned People's Daily said on its microblog.

China claims success in patrolling disputed islands

The statement was issued after anti-Japan protests spread to dozens of Chinese cities.

China sent the boats to the islands, called Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan, after Japan sealed a deal to buy three of the islands.

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has called for restraint on both sides.

"A misjudgement on one side or the other could result in violence, and could result in conflict," said Mr Panetta, who is in Tokyo for talks but due to travel to Beijing this week.

Mr Panetta met his counterpart, Satoshi Morimoto, and Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba.

"I did not bring up the topic today, but it is mutually understood between Japan and the United States that (the islands) are covered by the treaty," Mr Gemba told reporters after the meeting.

Mr Panetta also announced that US and Japanese officials had agreed to deploy a second missile defence system in Japan, designed to protect the region from the threat posed by North Korea.

Japan shuts factories, stores in China as islands dispute turns violent

SHANGHAI/BEIJING — Major Japanese brandname firms announced factory shutdowns in China on Monday and urged expatriates to stay indoors ahead of what could be more angry protests over a territorial dispute between Asia’s two biggest economies.

China’s worst outbreak of anti-Japan sentiment in decades led to weekend demonstrations and violent attacks on well-known Japanese businesses such as car makers Toyota and Honda, forcing frightened Japanese into hiding and prompting Chinese state media to warn that trade relations could now be in jeopardy.

“I’m not going out today and I’ve asked my Chinese boyfriend to be with me all day tomorrow,” said Sayo Morimoto, a 29-year-old Japanese graduate student at a university in Shenzhen.

Panetta urges calm, but says U.S. takes no sides in Japan-China dispute

TOKYO —
U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Monday called for diplomatic efforts to resolve a worsening territorial spat between Japan and China, after earlier warning disputes could draw East Asia into war.

Speaking after meetings in Tokyo with Japanese leader, Panetta urged “calm and restraint on all sides” in a row over disputed islands that has rapidly escalated in the last week into sometimes violent protests in China.

“Obviously we’re concerned by the demonstrations and the conflict over the Senkaku islands,” Panetta said, referring to the Japanese-administered archipelago that China claims and calls Diaoyu.

“It is extremely important that diplomatic means on both sides be used to try to constructively resolve these issues,” he said, adding a resolution of the dispute has to be based on “clear principles” and international law.

“It’s in everybody’s interest for Japan and China to maintain good relations and to find a way to avoid further escalation,” said Panetta, pounding the podium for emphasis.

Panetta arrived in Tokyo on Sunday evening after days of anti-Japanese protests had rocked cities across China, with diplomatic missions being targeted in some instances.

Panetta said intemperate actions over the disputed East China Sea islands could have serious consequences.

In a first, Indian tank brigades to defend China border

The plan, cleared by MoD, involves raising 6 new armoured regiments, equipped with 348 tanks. In addition, 3 mechanised infantry battalions will be raised
